It was a bitter-sweet ending to the 2019 campaign for Isle of Man golf pro Tom Gandy, who is proudly sponsored by Oak, when a fantastic run of top 10 finishes came to an end at the final stage of Qualifying School (Q School) for next year’s European Tour in Spain.
Coming into the event in good form Tom managed to shoot under par on five of the six rounds, including an outstanding 66 in round four to ensure he made it to the tee for the final two rounds, and guaranteeing himself a place on the Challenge Tour circuit for 2020.
Unfortunately he missed the place in the top 25 and ties that was needed to earn a full European Tour Card by a single shot, placing him 29th.
However, as the third highest ranked player in his category for the coming year it means that Tom can expect a number of European Tour invitations in 2020 so he should make his full European Tour debut in the next season.
Tom commented: “It was a bit gutting to come so close but I wasn’t at my best all week so it’s nice to know I can compete and come close despite that. I’d like to thank all of the sponsors and supporters who have helped make 2019 my best season to date.”
The likely invitations for full European Tour events include tournaments in South Africa, Kenya and across Europe, and will be spread throughout the year. One thing is for sure – wherever Tom’s golf takes him, he will proudly fly the Manx flag.
Managing director for Oak Isle of Man Tanya O’Carroll said: “It’s been a privilege to support Tom in his golfing journey this year. He’s performed exceptionally well and we look forward to continuing our support and wish him all the best in 2020.”
